Commodore's Message

A year and a bit after Hurricane Florence, I find myself on the brink of becoming Commodore of FHYC, an honor which I never expected. I shall do my best to live up to the high standards set by previous Commodores.

For the 2019 hurricane season we can be grateful that we did not suffer a repeat of Florence, although the people of Ocracoke and the Bahamas suffered greatly. Over the last year, the community and the Club have recovered to a great extent and most of our normal activities are back in place. The racers are out on the water, cruisers are off to places near and far. Entertainment, hospitality, and education are running smoothly. New members are still joining us.

We have challenges to address in 2020. We need to decide how to implement the proposal that residents of Fairfield Harbour, as well as homeowners, be eligible to join, although the requirement for boat ownership will not change. We need to understand the changing demographics of Fairfield Harbour and our membership. We should ask the membership what they want to do, on and off the water, and how they see the future of the Club. The objectives of the Club include preservation of the waterways and continuing education of the membership. Knowledge of safety and boating skills are essential whether we are sailing or operating a power boat. Finally, we must enjoy ourselves and have fun.

Enjoy the 2020 boating season! Ritchie Thomson Commodore
